WAAS stands for Wide Area Augmentation System. You may notice that your GPS can get off track from time to time showing you standing out in the middle of a field when you know for a fact that you’re on a road. The WAAS system uses a 25 ground reference stations to correct these GPS variations. What you get is GPS accuracy of 3 meters or better 95% of the time compared to the average 15 meter accuracy without the WAAS. Compare this to the original Garmin GPS systems that had an average accuracy of 100 meters and it’s easy to see how far GPS technology has come.
